Fairlawn - Once is enough
by Keshava on Mar 27, 2009.   Rating:
It's interesting for the sake of Raj nostalgia - but ridiculously overpriced. The food is always overcooked and stale. If you want a great "Raj Experience" stay at the Great Eastern Hotel nearby. It's where Kipling lived when he was a reporter for the Civil Gazette. Go for the nicer rooms which have bathtubs that are so deep ... read more »
The Fairlawn
by Rob_The_Pom on Mar 24, 2009.   Rating:
I had the funniest/bizarre/weirdly 'racist' experience here. It was Holi and a friend and I had got splattered with vast amounts of paint. We decided to adjourn to the Fairlawn for a much deserved pint. We sat for 20 minutes or so before a waiter lowered himself to come and speak to us (they were always rather pompous). ... read more »
Same Old , Same Old
by palerider on Mar 22, 2009.   Rating:
This place is running on the "old Raj" feel of it's rooms. But the rooms are from the Raj era, aka circa 1940's. The food is not exceptional, indeed, not even average, and it just doesn't reflect the high prices they ask. The hot water was "broken" always, and the touts were allowed to hang at the gate to hassle you as you ... read more »
Not worth the rating in this Forum...

Not worth the rating in this Forum. If one is paying USD 60 - 80 for rooms, which have nostalgia and character, I think one is overpaying, which I did. It was not great as in "Great" hotel. Its just an old hotel, with history, not everyone would be interested in, and shell out that much to stay for a a night, there ... read more »
The fairlawn is no doubt a classic...

The fairlawn is no doubt a classic hotel with a fantastic atmosphere and staff. However you pay for that. In general the rooms are run down, with tempermental showers and basic bathrooms. I stayed in 4 different rooms and basically the standard was similar in all off them. But saying all that, it is a great place to start your ... read more »

We stayed there after a budget guesthouse. While it isn't a modern hotel, it has loads of character. I spent an afternoon wandering around, looking at the pictures and lounging in various rooms. The owner is a really interesting woman who will tell you the history of the place. The man at the desk was one of the most genuinely ... read more »
A great place to "arrive"...

A great place to "arrive" in Kolkata. My room was nothing special for the price ( though the bathtub is a treat) but the staff and the company at meals is wonderful. I ended up splurging and staying a week just to keep checking in with my mealtime companions. A very lovely experience!!! and worth the splurge. ... read more »

I stayed here 4 days in February and wish I could have stayed longer. The food and service were wonderful. If you need laundry done the laundry wallah comes to the door to pick it up and discuss the details, and delivers it later in the day pressed within an inch of its life. My clothes looked so good I hardly recognized ... read more »
The very first person I spoke when...

The very first person I spoke when I started researching India told me that if I ever go to Calcutta I have to stay at the Fairlawn, I never forgot it. 10 years later I got to Calcutta, I was going to have one night in the Fairlawn, then a couple of nights in the YMCA, then fly to Gujarat. I was so amazed by the Fairlawn ... read more »
I escaped from the pit of the Hotel...

I escaped from the pit of the Hotel Maria here, I paid $30 per night for a single, with all meals plus tea, they also let me keep my room till mid-afternoon as well. Food was OK, but the way it was served and the company was just great, it was a good brweak for a couple of days. Highly reccommend... ... read more »

Old Raj hotel, still in good shape and pleasant place to stay. Uniformed waiters, a nice garden for an afternoon drink. I love this place! ... read more »
