Hotel Garuda Sikkim
Hotel Garuda, Upper Pelling, West Sikkim, 737113.
This place has the lot: a genuinely friendly welcome, comfortable rooms, a great restaurant and truly awesome views of the Kanchenjunga range in the Himalayas on a clear day. Run by the hyperactively helpful Krishna, the Garuda manages to combine a bit more comfort than I?m used to with a very reasonable price. My Rs. 250 a night room had it?s own Western bathroom with hot shower, cable TV (The Simpsons! At 6500 feet above sea-level! Hallelujah!) and a stunning view of the mountains. The higher rooms have the best views - Room 19?s the best. The restaurant is a friendly place to meet other guests and the food is really very good. The Chilli Boneless Chicken (Rs. 75) was so good, I ate it for 4 consecutive nights. Biryanis, Dopiazas and other Indian stuff are of a similar high standard as are the Tibetan dishes like momos and gyathuk. A bottle of the MIGHTY Hit Beer is a very reasonable Rs. 50. Krishna is very knowledgeable on local walks and there?s a trekking guide regularly updated by visitors. When I had a look through it, there was a lengthy piece on the Dzongri La trek from a guy that had only completed it two days previously: it?s about as up-to-date as it gets. There?s also a free book-swap service and, if the weather?s good, you can eat your breakfast on the roof taking in the view you can see in the last photo. I spent a week or so here in March 2006 and loved every minute of it. It?s worth buying a few candles, though, as the electricity goes off in Pelling very regularly. In the double rooms you get cable TV, a Western-style bathroom, constant hot water, great view of the mountains. The cheaper rooms have fewer amenities. Hotel Garuda Sikkim Rates and Room Information
Rs. 250 for a double, Rs. 100 for a single, Rs. 60 for a dorm bed.

I first went to Garuda in 1996.. it used to be a lil house in heaven then.. The cottage like entrance.. the very friendly owner and his lovely and courteous wife... It seemed like more of a home-stay than a hotel... and that sweet nostalgia stayed with me over a decade and more..
In April 2008 i went back to Garuda to connect ... read more »
