Worth every penny!, a review for The Oberoi Grand Kolkata (Calcutta)
by pinkyparker on Aug 01, 2009.   Rating:
Definitely a splurge hotel but worth it, especially if you stay here at the end of your trip. I first moved to the Oberoi Grand (and its VERY grand) after a bad experience at the Kennilworth Hotel. I have since stayed two more times. It is in a Raj-era building, has beautifully appointed rooms and is very safe for people ... read more »
Good Budget Choice, a review for Lytton Hotel Kolkata (Calcutta)
by pinkyparker on Jul 31, 2009.   Rating:
The Lytton Hotel is very close to the Indian Museum and New Market. Its buffet breakfast is good and you can have eggs to order. Try to get a room on the upper floors of the new building as they will be quieter. One of the receptionists, Miss Beryl is one of the nicest persons I have ever dealt with at a hotel. The hotel ... read more »
Fairlawn - Once is enough, a review for Fairlawn Hotel Kolkata (Calcutta)
by Keshava on Mar 27, 2009.   Rating:
It's interesting for the sake of Raj nostalgia - but ridiculously overpriced. The food is always overcooked and stale. If you want a great "Raj Experience" stay at the Great Eastern Hotel nearby. It's where Kipling lived when he was a reporter for the Civil Gazette. Go for the nicer rooms which have bathtubs that are so deep ... read more »
The Fairlawn, a review for Fairlawn Hotel Kolkata (Calcutta)
by Rob_The_Pom on Mar 24, 2009.   Rating:
I had the funniest/bizarre/weirdly 'racist' experience here. It was Holi and a friend and I had got splattered with vast amounts of paint. We decided to adjourn to the Fairlawn for a much deserved pint. We sat for 20 minutes or so before a waiter lowered himself to come and speak to us (they were always rather pompous). ... read more »
Same Old , Same Old, a review for Fairlawn Hotel Kolkata (Calcutta)
by palerider on Mar 22, 2009.   Rating:
This place is running on the "old Raj" feel of it's rooms. But the rooms are from the Raj era, aka circa 1940's. The food is not exceptional, indeed, not even average, and it just doesn't reflect the high prices they ask. The hot water was "broken" always, and the touts were allowed to hang at the gate to hassle you as you ... read more »
