Ritz Plaza
Overall:
Location:
Staff:
Cleanliness:
Positives: Helpfull staf
Negatives: Cranky manager, bit stale smelling
We stayed in the Ritz Plaza for 2 days early August 2009. I talked to their reception on the phone a few times and got worried about communication problems in English (I am a dutch national, my hindi is 'limited'). However, on arrival we were welcomed by very friendly staff with whom we had no communication issue whatsoever.
As we wanted to suprise my fiancees parents who were also there (but didnt know we came up from Mumbai) we asked their help in locating them. They were most helpful and did their utmost. It all worked out.
The rooms were fine. Nothing spectacular, but they were clean and complete. In the entire hotel I must say there was a bit of a stale smell, and the overal look of the interior probably hasn't been revised since the 80's. At these rates (INR 3000 for a double occ. room) I'd expect a bit more in India.
We enjoyed the fact that there was a bar with good seats to have a drink, and the restaurant was open very late. They even had live music (tabla/harmonium/vocals).
The breakfast buffet was complete, it was fine but not spectacular. Unfortunately we didn't like the coffee (instant powder + hot water, like in many places), and the eggs were not nice.
Whilst in Amritsar we visited the Golden Temple, the border closing ceremony, and the Mata temple. So we only needed the hotel for sleeping. For that purpose probably a cheaper hotel might be just as good.
It's claimed 4 star rating (on their website) I can't support, however our experience there was fine.
