Not a hotel or guesthouse but a fully functioning Tibetan Buddhist monastery. The monks have 17 rooms that they let out. Most are in a small block where you can rent a small single room with shared bathroom or a large double with it's own bathroom. I stayed in a small one-room cottage (The 'New House' - Rs. 125 a night) just on the edge of the monastery's grounds. There's also a larger, separate cottage (the 'Yellow House') with it's own bathroom that costs Rs. 300+ a night. The more expensive rooms have great views down the Kangra Valley. I loved staying here - being a monastery it has a uniquely tranquil atmosphere. If it's peace and quiet you're after, you can't beat this place. As it's a monastery, there are a few basic, obvious rules about dressing conservatively etc. Likes: Simply one of the best places I've ever stayed in. Incredibly peaceful, brilliant atmosphere. Waking up to the monks chants is something that I'll never forget. Great views down the Kangra Valley. The monks are really friendly and helpful - I was allowed to sit in during their puja and discreetly take a few photos. The climb up the hill to McLeod Ganj is a real killer on a hot day but it keeps a lot of people away and helps make the place so peaceful. I really can't find anything bad to say about this place. Rooms start at Rs. 150 (shared toilet / shower) to Rs. 300+ for your own cottage with it's own bathroom. All showers have hot water and all rooms, bathrooms & toilets are spotlessly clean. You can make local phonecalls from the Gompa office. There's a basic canteen that sells water, toilet roll and some snacks. Breakfast is Rs. 50 and dinner is Rs. 60.
