Question What is V.I.P quota in Indian Railway Reservation system?

Hi friends,

I've heard a lot of times about the VIP quota in the railway reservation system. Can anybody explain who enjoys this kind of quota? How many berths are generally reserved for VIP's in 2nd AC?

regards
Sayantan

The following is just my opinion, I may be wrong.

The VIP quota is very similar to the Emergency quota, both are just made-up terms, neither quota actually exists as far as I'm aware.

There is a quota called the HO quota, and depending on who you ask, this can be called the Head Office, High Official, Head Quarters or 'Hand money to an Official' quota. (Hump an Official quota)

A number of Seats/berths from all classes are allocated to the HO quota, and these are not normally used till the last day or 2 before a train is due to depart. (any that are not used can then help to reduce waitlists)

As far as I'm aware, you have to apply in writing to get onto the HO quota, and you'll need a good reason why you must take this train, I'm not sure who you address the letter to, you can ask the reservation supervisor at the train's originating station.

You'll almost certainly need a Waitlisted ticket for that train, this ticket is then moved to the HO quota if the application is successful.

To see the number of HO seats/berths, go to www.erail.in then search for your train, then select your journey date, then at the top right of the page, change the quota from 'General' to 'Head Quarter', then click on your chosen class of the train you intend to use.

The VIP quota is reserved for the VIP - read - MP's MLA's and other sundry VIP's who may decide to show up at the last moment. Earielr the seats used to be released from Railway ministers office each day , now I am not sure who does it. Those who have contacts in the Railway Ministers office can avail it. But normally it is used for Ministers and other public office bearers.

So, there must be some specific emergency reason to avail VIP quota. But if a official is not on duty can he avail it?

If you have relatives or friends as MP/MLA then you can get reservation in VIP quota otherwise if you have relatives or friends who are( or were) employed with Railways wyou can get seats allotted under HO quota. But to utilize these contacts you must buy a WL ticket first.

Apart from holding a waitlisted ticket, you also need to book ticket from the same origin for availing this facility, since the HO quota is location specific...

Yes, it's the same on the Indian Railways website, the HO quota option has been removed.

If anyone needs HO quota numbers, let me know, I've a program that can still get the info (just tested it), but I'm busy, so it may take a while to get back to you.

No link, it's a commercial program for travel agents, it's not cheap, and really not too useful for us ordinary folk.

I know of One stop Shop which has an excellent software base for its agents. Unfortunately I could never become one of them to make myself eligible to get one of the free copies.

I doubt you can use the Emergency Quota/HO for your own your company. This memo outlines the procedures.
