"...same year the war cabinet had secretly come to the conclusion that it would take Indians 500 years to learn to rule themselves.

My generation grew up with maps on the wall that we largely pink. That empire had gone already, but we were taught to have some pride that it had existed. As we grew older and learnt from sources other than old school books, a lot of the pride turned to shame. Children now, two generations on? What are they taught? What do they remember?

Whilst I am uneasy with the concept of people apologising for something they did not personally do, it calls for something more than regret. Or, at least, the regret could be expressed with more enthusiasm. Say it as if you mean it, as we were told as children.

Yes, the British prime minister should probably apologise. And even the British monarch (and Philip should keep his mouth shut). But if this happens, then the silence of not adding many other atrocities will be deafening. Britain is a proud country with a history to be ashamed of.

Is there any country that teaches history in its schools with a modicum of accuracy or proportion, I wonder.

History is written by the victors, about men and their conquests ! Losers reweave their mythologies and change their narratives.
